//Miserable Lie hello peeps, The GLC festival was on a Sunday ... so I would have been working at Camden market all day. Then after I'd packed up for the day I got the tube down to Waterloo with my recording equipment. I guess I must have arrived about 6, so the festival had been going for quite a while and the GLC car park was pretty packed. So no ideal placing for a recording ... I pushed my way to a position slightly to the right of the stage a little way back, trying to find a place where my immediate neighbours didn't look as though they either wanted to have loud animated conversations, or wanted to whoop, scream and sing at the tops of their voices. Can't remember who else I saw before the Smiths ... maybe Billy Bragg.
One thing that was noticable about this show, compared to the previous Smiths shows was the presence of girls. There had always been some girls at Smiths shows, but for the past couple of months the Smiths had started to feature in Smash Hits etc, and this was the first show I really noticed the presence of screaming girls down at the front ... and there would only be more as time went on.
Although this was a festival, I think most people had come down to see the Smiths ... it ceratinly had the atmosphere of a Smiths show ... and it felt like they were starting to get beyond being just a cult band. You know that feeling when you pet band finally becomes popular and you kind of hate it at the same time as thinking that its about time they got some recognition.
It was a great show. The bootleg tape of the show on my stall featured that famous picture of Morrissey's bottom with tree growing out of his back pocket.
Recorded on the trusty professional walkman with Sony EMC-929LT Mic onto Chrome tape.

Downloading now. Do you think it's the same source as this? Ken Livingstone: "I learnt a very important lesson at a music festival. It was
the early 1980s and we - the Greater London Council - were holding an open-air
gig with the Smiths as the main attraction. I was expected to go on and make
one of my fascinating political speeches just before the Smiths were due to
perform, by which time the gathered crowds had been waiting for hours for them
to appear. It was at this point that I learnt the importance of keeping the
politics brief when you're standing in front of a huge festival audience that,
however politically sympathetic, really isn't there for the rhetoric. I risked
five quick minutes of viciously denouncing Margaret Thatcher before
introducing the band to plenty of applause. Any more and it might have been a
different story. A good time was had by all. This lesson stood me in good
stead when I had to speak just before Run DMC, De La Soul and Public Enemy in
successive years at our annual anti-racist festivals."

don't know as I haven't heard that one. I suspect that quite a few of the smiths bootlegs around orginate from me ... especially the later ones. They were all available at the time from our Camden market stall. I traded quite a lot in the late 80s early 90s, and since 1999 I've digitized most of them and traded quite a bit. But there will be other sources of some of the shows. I've checked what's already been seeded here, but in the end I thought that I might as well seed all my masters. With most of the others, you're not sure of the source ... at least with these you're sure they're direct from the masters. No analog stages ... No lossy compression ... no bad eq jobs ... no digital glitches.

A big upgrade on the official bootleg called "GLC Jobs For A Change Festival". This is a different recording. Very nice. "Hello Pete from the Telephone Boxes" at the end of track 6. Classic audience recording ;)

This is one of the shows I was hoping would turn up, so many thanks, Steve! his series is unmissable! However, seeing as how I did manage to miss it until now (Monday morning) it'd be nice to see a few more seeders still keeping the faith - I can't be the only one who hasn't downloaded this one yet, can I?
