/Handsome Devil This wasn't the best day we ever had. Northampton isn't far from London, especially if you're starting from Camden. Pretty much straight up the M1. We left at lunch-time to give us plenty of time, but just as we joined the M1 the Van started playing up, and we limped into Scratchwood Services before it gave up the ghost. Luckily Paul was a member of the RAC, so called them up to have a look. After 45 minutes of so an RAC van arrived ... but the van was dead! Paul's membership included towing the van back to his home, so me and Jo went in to the Services to sit and chat, while Paul and the Van got towed back to his house, where he picked up his car, and raced back to pick us up. We sat in the services cafe for what seemed liked an eternity, before Paul eventually got back, and we started back up the M1 to Northampton. By now we didn't have plenty of time, and we arrived in Northampton which just about time to locate the venue and find somewhere to park. However when we went into the Derngate Centre, we found there was no guest list ... or at least, it was all seated and fire regulations wouldn't allow them to have anyone standing. So once again we sat at the bar, and as time ticked by, what little hope we had evaporated as we heard the strains of Romeo and Juliet, and then William starting up.
After a few songs, we started discussing whether we should wait around to see if we could see anyone afterwards, or just go home ... and then a stranger wanders up to us and asks if we need to get in. He says he and his friends have a box with an empty seat, and asks if one of us wants to come in. Paul doesn't have his recorder, so I get the nod, and off I rush into the box and take my seat at the back. I hurriedly get my equipment out (ooh err missus!) and switch on in the middle of That Joke. Finally I get to take a look around. The Deargate Centre is quite odd. Seems like a rectangular hall, slightly sloped and all seated. The sides are just straight walls with boxes in them about 3 high. I'm on the bottom level about 2 along ... so quite close to the stage. It all feels very closed in, and like you're peeking at the show through an outside window. But the performance in great, and they wheel out This Charming Man for the encore, for the only time this tour, so I'm glad I managed to record at least part of the show. After the show, I thank my hosts, and wander out to find Paul and Jo. So Short But Sweet this week. Again this was recorded using my Sony Professional Walkman with Sony EMC-929LT Mic onto Metal tape.

Great link David. It looks more impressive than I remember. But I never really had a good look round with the lights up, so probably didn't get the best impression. I think I must have been in the bottom row, 2nd along.

Cheers Steve for getting some of this on tape, after all the problems of your journey!! Glad it wasn't a venue further away otherwise you would have missed the whole gig then!

Just burned this one up. Steve, am I right in thinking that the track listing actually runs like this? ---------- 01 Shakespeare's Sister*
02 Rusholme Ruffians
03 The Headmaster Ritual
04 Still Ill
05 Meat Is Murder
06 /Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
07 /Miserable Lie
08 /This Charming Man**
09 /Handsome Devil [*fades in during first verse] [**cuts in at first chorus] ---------- It seems like That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore is should be listed in the "missing tracks" section, and that somehow the start of This Charming Man was not recorded.

Yes - sorry. Just checked the tape and it starts with S Sister like you say. Can't trust my memory obviously ... although I do remember having problems turning the tape over, so missing the beginning of This Charming Man
