And so to the Scottish tour, which, on reflection, was probably my favorite tour. It was the first time we followed the tour from town to town without a break, and the band were still relatively small. By the Queen Is Dead tour, things had blown up big time, and there was definitely some burn-out setting in ... but for this tour the band were Fresh and Hungry.
I've already posted the Initial Irvine show, so this isn't really the start. Irvine was a great show to start the tour, and we found our way back to the band's hotel afterwards. Not quite sure how we did that. Paul was sure he knew where it was, and we drove down all sorts of tiny country roads in the pitch black following his directions. I was sure we'd get totally lost, but suddenly we were at a small country hotel, and we found the band, minus Morrissey, who, of course, had already headed to bed ... with a good book no doubt, in the bar. We all sat around chatting for a few hours (pictures in the slideshow of the Irvine DVD) before we headed back to our B&B.
Next morning we set off for Edinburgh after breakfast, going right past Glasgow where we'd be returning the next day. First thing we did when we got there was to find the Tourist Information Centre. There's one in every major town in the UK, and they had (probably still have) a service where they'll find you a good cheap B&B for the night. They let you know what's available at what price, then ring around until they found a vacancy for you ... all for free. So then we're straight down to the chosen B&B to check in and unload our stuff, and then straight out to find the Venue, which is down the bottom of the hill (there's a great big one right in the middle of the town, where the castle is). I remember the venue had a big empty sand pit for a car park where we hung out for a while, trying to see if we could see anything. But there was just a big back door, which was firmly closed, so no chance of sneaking in for the soundcheck. We also wandered up to the Hotel, which was a modern affair just up the road. Much larger and more impersonal than the previous nights lodgings ... and no sign of band or crew anywhere. Jo had arranged to do an interview with Johnny for a Fanzine she was working on, so we were back to the venue for that mid afternoon.
I don't remember much about the inside of the venue. It was all seated. But I can't remember where we were put or much about the show itself. All the shows on this tour were pretty good, but this one doesn't stand out for me, so I'll let the tape speak for itself. All the recordings on this tour are pretty good. I think we'd really sorted out using our equipment and the best places to record from, and there was generally pretty good sound at all the venues. After the show we went back to the hotel in the hope of spotting someone, but there was to be no repeat of last night.
Again this was recorded using my Sony Professional Walkman with Sony EMC-929LT Mic onto Metal tape

Thanks a lot, Steve. Much as I appreciate all the recordings from the "Meat Is Murder" trek, this is the run of gigs I've been looking forward to the most. I agree with you that this is a great little tour with the band absolutely brimming with confidence and playing at the top of its game... HUGE thanks!!

Hi Steve,
I had a few doubt's if I should try this.
In the past I mad a few bad experiences with audience recordings ...
Bit this one sounds great ... :P
You did a very good job ... and my doubts have gone away totally ...
I can' believe that you saw them so many times live ...
I didn't managed to see them ... not only a single time ...
Thanks Steve for sharing this with me ...
I think I come back soon to your profile ... and your stories ... and your torrents ...
Greetings Stubs
