I've been wondering if there is more to the relationship between Moz and fanzine/site editor Julia Riley than meets the eye. The first time i heard this song it made me think of her. Lines such as "the one i love is standing near" (she's always in the front row and he makes it a point to speak to her at almost every show). And "there is nothing i can do to make you mine" could be because he is supposedly gay, or bi, or maybe confused, and knows in the end it couldn't work with her. The title itself "black cloud" would be her, the black cloud, or albatross around his neck which is always around. Further lines such as "i play the game of favorites now" (by providing guest passes for her for every show), and "i can freeze you out" (he could stop providing access to her) all add to it. I know it's pretty silly but you can really work the words to fit their odd relationship if you think about it. :?
Here are the lyrics, judge for yourself:
Black Cloud
The one I love is standing near
The one I love is everywhere
And I can woo you
I can amuse you
But there is nothing I can do to make you mine
Black cloud, black cloud
The one I love roosts in the mind
Can snap this spell
Or, increase hell
And I can chase you and I can catch you
But there is nothing I can do to make you mine
Black cloud, black cloud
Oh, black cloud
Oh, black cloud
I play the game of Favorites now
I can I must I will I do
I can please you
Or, I can freeze you out
But there is nothing I can
do to make you mine
Black cloud, black cloud, black cloud
I can choke myself to please you
And I can sink much lower than usual
But there's nothing I can do
To make you mine

Knowing what little I know of Morrissey's penchant for VERY abstract references in his lyrics from the Smiths up, it's very plausible but only he knows for sure. ;)
