Anyone else think the CD remasters are not good? The highs are ear splitting.

Not bought them, nowt wrong with the original versions.
Quite like the remastering on The Very Best Of though but that's different.

I have them, and they're fantastic. I've read nothing but good things about them, so it's obviously not just me.

Finally got to listen to a few of mine today, and they seem mighty fine to my ears. Had a look at them in SoundForge and they look almost as fine. I had assumed that perhaps they may have taken the sound right the way up (brickwalled) but no, everything looks reasonably sweet, not much clipping on the first few albums. It does get slightly worse with the latter albums but even then not overly drastic.
Perhaps the worst offending track that I've looked at (only looked at a couple dozen) is "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" from the "Hatful Of Hollow" album. Very strange that one, looks like it's been brickwalled then reduced to fit in with the overall sound of the rest of the album.
For £35 it could have been better but then again it could have been a lot worse, just think what those poor people who bought the limited edition set will think

I wouldn't say it looks crap but basic would be a good word to use, very basic.

I know what you mean, it does look like the sleeves are made from recycled cardboard but i'm not sure. They look great though in my opinion, and if it helps the environment, all the better.

Just read the UNCUT review in this months or was it last months (October 2011 issue) of the collection and it gives it the nod and 5 stars. The review is 90% reverance and 10% actual review.
The one paragraph the review gets says "These new remasters seem 'softer', less abrasive, not so teeth rattling" when compared to the remastered compilation album 'The Sound of The Smiths' from 2008.

'The Sound of The Smiths' was a victim of the loudness war...

Has anyone turned them up? On both my hi-fi's, they sound really bad at a loud level, which sucks, cause I love to play these albums cranked up. Sticking with the originals, I guess.

I've just completed a set of 24/96 rips of the original RT vinyls, I will compare the box set to them and see how it stacks up.
