A nice, early pro-shot video taken from a VH2 re-broadcast of a German music
show called Rockpalast. I picked these MPGs as a torrent some time ago and
merely put a small menu on the front and re-seeded, so I take none of the
credit. Seems to be better quality than other versions of this show.
Until someone digs some other pro-shot vids out of the archive, this is
about the best you'll get.
Girl Afraid is a CD bootleg of this show, and has improved audio quality.

Despite this being the Smiths' first gig in Germany, there was a great deal of
stage climbing, or attempts to do so. It seemed like the habit taken on by the
British had crossed over to Europe. The band and particularly Morrissey were
glowing. The concert was a complete success and the Smiths had to perform
three encores.
As the Smiths came on stage, Morrissey, dressed in typical 1984 attire of
large blouse held by one button, NHS specs and flowers in the back pocket,
greeted the audience and launched into "Hand In Glove". After the song he
encouraged the fans "Thank you... please come closer, please come closer...
come closer... come... come..." After the next song "Heaven Knows I'm
Miserable Now", the crowd went into a chant of "Morrissey! Morrissey!". As had
become standard in 1984, "Pretty Girls Make Graves" included that reggae-ish
bridge as Morrissey sang "I could have been wild and I could have been free."
After that number Morrissey introduced the next one "Thank you, you're
delightful... 'Still Ill'!" During that song Morrissey ended up writhing on
the floor twice, crushing the bouquet of flowers that were still in his back
pocket. The next song was introduced "Barbarism begins at home you know..."
After its performance Morrissey enquired "Does anybody have anything really
intelligent to say?... No?" In "This Night Has Opened My Eyes", Morrissey sang
the slightly alternate line "And I'm never happy and I'm never sad". "You've
Got Everything Now" was introduced with "This might sound really hard to
believe... but you've got everything... now!"
After that song the crowd went into the "Morrissey! Morrissey!" chant again.
In "What Difference Does It Make?", Morrissey changed one line to "But now you
make me feel so ashamed because I only got two heads". Towards the end of that
he removed his shirt, swang it around for a short while and threw it into the
crowd, finishing the song, as well as the main set, bare chested.
When the Smiths reentered stage for the first encore, Morrissey exclaimed
"Thank you, you're very nice" and the band started "These Things Take Time".
After the song Morrissey asked "Any suggestions?" extended the microphone to
the first row and had a hard time pulling it back. So far in Europe Morrissey
had be sober on lyrical modifications, probably because of the language
barrier or because the public wasn't as familiar with the words to appreciate
the effect. However in the next song, a second helping of "This Charming Man",
Morrissey changed lines to "Will nature makes a mouse of me yet" and "it's
gruesome that someone so ugly should care".
At the end of that the Smiths left stage once more, and again fans tried to
get on stage while security tried their best to hold them back. After a second
encore of "Hand In Glove" and leaving again, the Smiths were called back by a
"Morrissey! Morrissey!" chant. As they returned, Morrissey lead them instead
in a chant of "Smiths! Smiths! Smiths!". He was successful, even when he asked
them to chant "Louder!". During this final encore for which the Smiths did
"Barbarism Begins At Home" a second time, Morrissey removed his shirt again
and threw it in the audience after giving it a few swings.
BOOTLEGS
This was recorded and broadcast on the German television show Rockpalast. The
first broadcasts included the complete setlist minus the second "Hand In
Glove". Some re-runs were shortened to 10 or 14 songs, in a different order
while other re-runs featured the complete concert.
The television footage has made it onto bootleg videos and DVDs. The recording
in circulation is for the complete concert and is also interesting for the
backstage footage of the Smiths before encores, taking a well deserved break
as the fans in the venue are calling them back.
The whole concert is also available in audio on the "Girl Afraid" bootleg CD.
As it was produced from a television recording, the sound quality is very
good. A bootleg LP simply titled "The Smiths" also features this concert, but
"Miserable Lie" as well as the encores of "This Charming Man" and "Hand In
Glove" are missing.
"Wilde About The Smiths", a factory pressed cd in digipack has "Barbarism
Begins At Home" from this concert with many other live tracks, rarities and
radio and tv sessions.
MP3s of the "Girl Afraid" bootleg was easily found on the usual trading
networks.

While this version is pretty good, you might want to check out the 100% digital version which was seeded on Dime recently. Oh, I just noticed that the digital version is far shorter. Anyhow.

Regardless, I'll seed this torrent a little later.

Hello!
Thanks for sharing, and for seeding...
I just noticed the songs here are re-sequenced... is this the way it was broadcast, or was there a mistake in the bootleg making?
Also, David, isn't this version digital? What's the difference with this and the version on Dime that you say is '100%' digital?
thanks!

As per the info, I downloaded it as a torrent a while ago. There were four video files which I put down sequentially when I made this DVD. I guess I could have accidentally re-ordered them, but I don't think so.
This version seems to taken from VH2 cable, and then encoded and turned into a DVD. The 100% digital version I mention is where someone has captured the actual video stream sent from the satellite, i.e. the same digital data which is sent to your set top box without re-encoding. I guess you could say that an analog source was 2nd generation while a 100% digital was 1st generation.

No it's not in the bootleg making... songs in segment three were mixed with others from segment two. I'm pretty sure it's the way they broadcast it. If they hadn't done it they might have needed to cut the lengthy "Crack On The Head" in two.
